BEAUFORT, S.C. (WSAV) - Marine Corps installations in the Tri-Command area will immediately implement increased security measures at their respective entry gates, the Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Beaufort announced.
The strengthening comes in light of recent security threats and will be implemented "as a precaution to ensure the safety and security of service members, civilians, families, and facilities across the Tri-Command," MCAS said.
Key changes include:
• 100% Identification Checks: All individuals entering the installations must present a valid Department of Defense identification card, such as a Common Access Card.
• Suspension of the Trusted Traveler Program: Individuals without DoD ID must report to the appropriate Visitor Control Center to request access.
• Random Vehicle Inspections: Drivers should anticipate occasional inspections as part of the enhanced security protocols
Drivers and visitors should expect delays at all entry gates while these measures are in effect.
MCAS acknowledges that the measures will add a delay for drivers and visitors at these entry gates.
“As a commander, my first responsibility is the safety and well-being of everyone who lives and works on our installations,” said Colonel Mark Bortnem, commanding officer of MCAS Beaufort. “These security measures are necessary to protect our Marines, Sailors, civilians, and families, and they allow us to remain the most ready when and if our Nation calls. I want to thank everyone for their cooperation as we work together to ensure a safe and secure environment for all.”
Further details on base access procedures can be found on the MCAS Beaufort website.
News 3 spoke with a representative of Hunter Army Airfield and Fort Stewart who said they were also increasing security measures.
They have also temporarily suspended the Trusted Traveler Program.
Additionally, every individual in the vehicle will need a DoD Identification Card to gain access to the base. Those who do not have a DoD ID Card will need to go through the Visitor Control Center.
