All 43 Yemassee monkeys recaptured

YEMASSEE, S.C. (WSAV) – Forty-three monkeys that escaped the Alpha Genesis Primate Research Center in Yemassee have been recaptured.

Back in November, the rhesus macaques got out after a worker left a door open while they were cleaning the enclosure, Alpha Genesis CEO Greg Westergaard said.

On Friday, the Yemassee Police Department shared that all of the monkeys were safe and appeared to be in good health.

"Mr Westergaard thanks the community for their support stating 'It was a real team and community effort,'" Yemassee PD stated.

Alpha Genesis Inc. provides nonhuman primate products and bio-research services worldwide, its website says.

Westergaard said there are several thousand monkeys at the research center.

This is not the first time primates escaped from the research center. WSAV reported about a group that escaped in May 2016.
