Minneapolis-based Target is planning to phase out its DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) programs that specifically support Black employees, Black-owned businesses, and the LGBTQ+ community. Many Black shoppers took to social media, calling for a boycott of Target stores in response. Social media influencer Tabatha Brand joined the conversation, pointing out that a mass boycott could actually hurt Black-owned brands—like hers—that rely on Target’s shelves for exposure and sales.
Research by Insider shows that nearly eight out of ten U.S. shoppers frequent Target. The average customer is a white suburban mom, 35 to 44 years old, earning about $80,000 a year. Now, the question is, if we decide to boycott Target over this DEI rollback, are we also prepared to boycott every other store that makes similar moves?
