MCINTOSH COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - The search for a suspect involved in a police chase and crash in McIntosh County has ended.

McIntosh County Volunteer Fire Chief Mark Deverger confirms that a McIntosh County Fire and Rescue boat found the suspect’s body in the vicinity of Mahaw Island around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, a few miles from where he crashed. McIntosh County Sheriff Stephen Jessup identified the suspect as 27-year-old Robert Allen Giroux.

Giroux crashed his motorcycle into the guardrail on Interstate 95 just south of the Darien exit, flying into the river.

“When the subject failed to stop, the deputy pursued him southbound with lights and sirens engaged,” the release stated.

The McIntosh County Sheriff’s Office said the deputy continued the chase southbound on I-95 due to favorable weather and light traffic.

According to the sheriff’s office, Giroux lost control and went into the Darien River. Several agencies, including the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, were on scene since last Tuesday night looking for him.
