Madame Tussauds is under fire for its new wax figure of Beyoncé, but Whoopi Goldberg is defending the wax museum and its portrayal of the superstar.
A photo of Beyonceâs new wax figure at the Madame Tussauds in New York went viral this week. While it was initially shared on social media by an excited fan, the picture spread far and wide as many complained that the figurine didnât actually represent the singer. The songstressâ âBeyhive,â as her fandom is known, accused the museum of not only getting her facial structure wrong, but also âwhite-washingâ her skin color. A spokesperson later said the âlighting within the attraction combined with flash photography may distort and misrepresentâ the wax figures.
Goldberg pointed that out on the ABC talk show, but also made an additional argument in support of Maddam Tussauds and their work. âIt is her, and I can prove it,â she said, showing a video of the meticulous process a celebrity undergoes when selected for a wax double. âThey measure every inch of your faceâŠ. So when they put it together, it is your face,â she said. She acknowledged that peopleâs faces shift depending on what theyâre doing, but no matter what, the measurements they take are the official âstructure of your face.â
Sunny Hostin, however, said, âI feel sometimes they get it right and sometimes not so right. I was in the London museum and I was like, âEddie Murphy looked like Eddie Murphy!â And then other people, I was like, âWho is that?!'â To that Goldberg responded, âIt doesnât always look the way you think itâs supposed to look.â And as for critics who said Beyonceâs statue more resembles Shakira and Lindsay Lohan, the moderator argued, âMaybe they donât realize that if people are wearing the same kind of outfits⊠sometimes folks do tend to just look like everybody else.â
Goldberg added, âThe truth of the matter is, sometimes when you take pictures and you do those flashes, we all get washed out. Sometimes we just all look alike. At this table, sometimes we take a picture and you donât know whoâs brown and whoâs not. Itâs the truth!â Watch the video below.
